4-H Show
4-H at the Fall Fair has been a tradition for many years. It is chance for the youth age 10 - 21 years to show off their achievement. This could range from a loaf of bread, scrapbook or beef or dairy cattle. 4-H runs through out the year in Rainy River Valley and the Fall Fair is where the kids get to display all that they have learned. A big part of the Fall Fair and a big part of 4-H is the Rainy River District is the Annual 4- H Beef Show/Steer Auction.
To be a member in the Beef Club, you must join a club and attend 6 meetings. Your animal has to be registered with 4-H Ontario by June 1st of each year. Kids can choose to take a steer (butcher animal) or a heifer (breeding stock). They start feeding and training these animals in early spring and then "show them off" at the Fair. The Steer's are weighed on Friday night at 6 p.m. - this puts the kids and their animals in one of three weight divisions. Saturday morning at 9 a.m. they start to do their stuff, first the kids are judged - showmanship is the true name - this is where the judge looks at the kids and how well they work and show off their animal, it is a true honour to be chosen number one.
The next class is when the judge looks only at your animal. The crowd is on the edge of their seat waiting to see who will get the call to be Grand Champion Steer or Heifer. The Grand Champion Heifer goes back home to be a part of your farm for 10 or more years.
The Grand Champion Steer goes into the Annual Auction at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. This is another exciting time - waiting to see who will bid on your steer and just how high the bid will go. This is how many kids have made their summer wages. You do not have to live on a farm to be in 4-H - showing cattle is just one small part of 4-H. If you have time to visit our exhibition hall, located next to the 4-H Food Booth, you can see all the different opportunities that 4-H has to offer.
